He did copy Kirby a bit(a LOT of artist were copying Kirby back then like John Buscema tho he broke away quickly from it, and Keith Giffen who in my opinion was the most successfull in imitating Kirby tho his drawings were smaller! I think Herb really found his own calling in the G.I. Joe series, his style just kept evolving, I know what you mean with Liefeld(a man too lazy to draw pupils!)his style was simplified like Kirbys in his later years, I think thats what Liefeld was after, Still it had its charms like using obvious girly-mag poses for his females (like Lethal's constant flying split-kicks with her ass in your face! MAJOR C-U-T-E-S!)
Trimpe was one of my favorite artists in the Marvel bullpen. Some say that he was aping the style of Jack Kirby, but it seems to me that his style actually came of its own in this way. He was something really unique. I was never aware of how he got his start (coming in as the regular on the Hulk's comic), but I soon came to identify him with the monster, and later with the GI Joe comics.
He's still out there these days, but I've read that he started making himself draw like Rob Liefeld during the 1990s and was an epic fail at it. A shame, really. I could take a man making improvements in his technique, but to adopt a style that has since become a symbol of "bad artist"...
Yes, all resolved, by a child who saved them all! Typical Kaiju ending! But we were treated to some of the best artwork of Herb Trimpe's career! That inside-out tug of war between Godzilla and Thor with the Empire State Building in the middle was worth the price of the comic!!
I could vaguely recall seeing some art to that effect. I'm not sure if it were in one of the fanzines, or if it was a Marvel pinup of that era. The Godzilla comic lasted only two years during the late 1970s, but it was wrapped up properly. (The superheroes won the battle, yet Godzilla swims away relatively unscathed.)
I remember that, i also remember somebody at Marvel did a funny illo of The Hulk vs. Godzilla, Showed the Hulk imbeded in the ground in big G's footprint! while Godzs is walking away, Hulkies screeming as soon as he pulls himself out of the ground, Hulk will smash or something like that, So long ago and it was geniuenly funny!
